Google Chrome OS unveiled, released to open source community

Last.fm is a music-based social networking site that revolves around building playlists of tracks that users listen to and using those playlists to connect with users that have similar interests. The site also features suggested music playlists, including songs and artists suggested to a user based on her or his playlist history. This method of gathering information on what a user is listening to through a plug-in was coined as "scrobbling." Last.fm encourages unsigned artists and independent labels to promote their music through the site; it allows artists to upload MP3s for streaming, free download, or purchase. The service also gives artists access to more detailed airplay statistics on their songs and the ability to edit their own profile pages.

Founded in 2002, last.fm was acquired in 2007 by CBS Interactive for $280 million. The site currently claims over 21 million users in over 200 countries.
