Google Chrome OS unveiled, released to open source community

Google Maps is a web-based mapping service and extensible technology provided free from Google. The Google Maps application programming interface (API) allows third-party websites and applications to use the data from Google Maps, allowing for a wide array of "mashups" combining various data sources into custom applications ranging from bike route planners to housing rental services and photo location apps.

Other notable related components of the service are satellite view, which provides high-resolution satellite images across many regions of the world, Street View providing 360° panoramic street-level views of various U.S. cities, Google Transit which helps plan travel routes using public transportation, and Google Maps for Mobile allowing the mapping application to run on most Java based phones. Another related standalone product is Google Earth, an application for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux offering an extended featureset for viewing the globe.
