Google Chrome OS unveiled, released to open source community

The Google Editions web-based book store will launch in 2010 with between 400,000 and 600,000 books. All of those books will be available in a yet-to-be-revealed open format that will work on a wide range of devices, including e-readers, cell phones, laptops, and more. The books will be readable offline.

Pricing isn't available yet, but if it's reasonable, Editions could be a strong competitor to Amazon's Kindle store, which currently dominates eBook sales. However, a Google rep said that a partnership with Amazon's Kindle team is unlikely. That doesn't mean the books won't be readable on the Kindle though; we'll just have to wait and see what happens.
