Gmail is Google's free web-based e-mail service. Gmail offers over 7 GB of storage capacity to each user—significantly more than many of its competitors. Additional space is available with a paid subscription.
Gmail's interface has several distinguishing features. The extensive search function is prominently displayed, and e-mail replies are cataloged in a visual format that emphasizes conversation like a message board. Gmail also offers a web-based instant message service that allows communication not only between Gmail users, but between other instant messenging service users as well.
On December 8th, 2009, Google announced that the Offline Gmail feature—which lets you access your e-mail even if you're not connected to the internet—graduated from Google Labs. It's now a standard feature for Gmail users.
