Google Chrome OS unveiled, released to open source community

Gmail is Google's free web-based email service, introduced in direct competition to Yahoo! mail and Microsoft's Hotmail, both of which are also web-based. The appeal of web-based email services, as opposed to clients installed locally, is that a user's email can be accessed from anywhere he or she can get on the web. Gmail offers over 7 GB of storage capacity per user (and continues to increment the amount of free storage offered), significantly more than its competitors, with additional space available with paid subscription. Google claims with its storage space, most users would never have to delete an email to make room for more.

Gmail's interface has several distinguishing features. The extensive search function is prominently displayed, and email replies are catalogued in a visual format that emphasizes conversation similar to a message board. Gmail also offers a web-based instant message service that allows communication not only between Gmail users, but between other instant messenging service users as well. This service can also be upgraded to include audio and video chat.

Google's habit of producing a broad arsenal of different mini-applications is not lost on Gmail, which includes its own public testing grounds (dubbed "Gmail Labs") for new additions.
