Samsung's 256GB SSD is a solid state hard drive for desktop and laptop computers that uses Samsung's flash memory to store information instead of the traditional rotating magnetic technology. The 256GB SSD features a sequential read rate of 220MBs per second, a write rate of 200MBs per second, and erase cycles of 100GBs per minute. The hard drive, measuring 2.5 inches in width, uses 1.1W of power and, according to Samsung, is capable of copying 25 HD quality movies in 21 minutes. According to Samsung, the 256GB model more than doubles the performance of its 64GB and 128GB siblings, while a traditional hard drive with similar performance would run at approximately 15,000rpm, create more heat, and drain more energy. Although Samsung has begun mass production of the hard drive, there is no word yet on a consumer price.
