Windows Mobile 6.5 is the next iteration of Microsoft's mobile operating system primarily used in smartphones. Including significant changes to the appearance of the OS, the update primarily focuses on making the touchscreen user interface more finger-friendly; previous versions of Windows Mobile were geared toward control using a stylus. Some of the major changes in this version include:
- A new honeycomb-style main menu (instead on a drop-down list), which Microsoft says is easier to manipulate on a touchscreen.
- A redesigned unlock screen, which lets you know if you've received a voicemail, text message, or phone call through an icon for each action before you unlock the phone.
- Internet Explorer Mobile 6, a redesigned version of the program with a touchable zoom slider and frequently used commands. The new version also has support for new types of embeddable streaming video.
- Redesigned menus that don't require a stylus
- Touchable home and contacts screens
As of this writing, no devices currently on the market are slated to receive the 6.5 update. Windows Mobile 6.5 will instead come preinstalled on devices in the fourth quarter of 2009. Head to the product details tab for a video of the new OS in action.
