Windows 3.1 is the seen as Microsoft's first widely successful operating system. Originally released as Windows 3.0 in 1990, Windows 3.1 grew to run on a wide variety of systems, and eventually became the preeminent market leader, especially when compared to rival Apple's MacOS. Windows 3.1 introduced several key concept to PC users, including crude multitasking and a file explorer program that used icons instead of simply text. Microsoft also introduced Windows 3.11 for Workgroups, which allowed users to share files over the SMB protocol, using the IPX network standard.

Different iterations of Windows 3.x existed till 1994, when Microsoft did away with the 3.x versions and introduced Windows 95.
