Available for both Windows and Mac OS, Skype is used to establish telephone communication channels over the internet. It is available in 28 languages, and provides a variety of free services, such as PC-to-PC calls to anyone else with Skype software installed.
Skype charges by the minute when you're calling landlines or cell phones, but the service includes call forwarding and SMS messaging. If you use Firefox you can directly call numbers from the web browser with Skype's Firefox plugin.
On July 22nd, 2009 Skype 2.8 for Mac OS X was released; it added screen sharing, an option to receive notifications when contacts change their status messages, notes that you can add to your contacts' profiles, and the ability to buy access to Wi-Fi hotspots using your Skype login.
