The PlayOn Digital Media Server is a DLNA/UPnP-compatible media server for Windows that sends online video content to PS3 and Xbox 360 game consoles and other DLNA-compliant devices. Using the pre-existing browser and UPnP capabilities, PlayOn can stream content from such sites as Netflix, CNN, YouTube, CBS, Hulu, and ESPN. A plug-in architecture allows third parties to make their content available via PlayOn as well, with the Revision3 network signing on board to deliver one of the first plug-ins. You can experiment with the software for free for 14 days, while the license for the download has a retail price of $39.99.
On June 24, 2009 PlayOn announced a major new feature enhancement, local media browsing. With this addition, all compatible local content on your PC can also be streamed to your PS3, 360 or other DLNA-equipped device — essentially adding the functionality that software like Null River's Media Link for PS3 and Connect 360 for the Xbox 360 provide to the PlayOn server along with its internet streaming functions.
