Palm OS is the computer operating system that acts as a platform for the personal digital assistant (PDA) units produced by Palm Inc. Palm OS differs from Microsoft's Windows CE and Symbian's EPOC in that Palm OS was created specifically as a proprietary operating system. Originally designed for the Pilot PDA in 1996, the operating system is a single-tasking environment, meaning the platform allows one application at a time. The latest release, Garnet 5.4, supports both monochrome and color screens up to 480 x 320 resolution. Also included with the OS is a set of applications, among which are Dates, Address Book, To Do List, Memo Pad, and Calculator. The Palm OS is now implemented on devices such as smartphones, mobile gaming devices, barcode readers, and GPS units.
