Originally released on October 25, 2001, Microsoft's Windows XP (short for "experience") operating system was designed for use in home and business desktop PCs as well as notebooks and media centers. The XP system is the successor to the Windows 2000 Professional and Windows Me and was most commonly available in two editions — Windows XP Home, targeted at home users, and Windows XP Professional, targeted at power users, business and enterprise clients. Features included fast start-up, remote desktop functionality, and increased support for DSL modems and wireless network connections. Direct OEM and retail sales of Windows XP were discontinued as of June 30, 2008.
