Microsoft Windows Media Center was first introduced in 2002 as a way to bring all of a computer user's media files into one location, offering streamlined playback and search features. Typically bundled within an operating system, Media Center can automatically detect the media files on a computer and present them in a more organized fashion than searching for the files through folders. Today, Windows Media Center is available in two forms -- Windows Media Center 2005 (included with Windows XP Media Center Edition) and Windows Vista Media Center (included with Windows Vista Home Premium and up). Both versions offer support for images, videos, music and live TV components. Windows Media Center also uses "extenders" which allow other devices, such as Microsoft's Xbox 360, to utilize a computer's Media Center capablities through a network connection.
