Teenage Engineering's Operator 1 is a MIDI controller and synthesizer designed for portability (at half an inch thick) and featuring a FM radio and built-in motion sensor as well as its synth capabilities, allowing you to sample music from the radio and move the device to add sound effects. The MIDI portion of the Op-1 lets you control software synthesizers, four endless encoders, transport controls, and 16 dedicated keys for quick changes. The synthesizer has 8 synth models and 8 samplers for stand-alone synthesizing, in addition to a choice of effects to apply, an as-yet unspecified sequencer, an arpeggitator, and a built-in microphone and speaker. You can also record creations as MP3 files for sending them to friends.
The Op-1 is also equipped with a USB 2.0 port and minijacks for audio in/out and headphones. Teenage Engineering will be releasing beta versions of the product in 2009, with the release currently planned for 2010 and the price to be announced. See the video below for details about the device from the Teenage Engineering team at their booth at Frankfurt Musikmesse '09.
