Google Chrome OS unveiled, released to open source community

Product Details

The TechCrunch CrunchPad is an internet tablet with an Intel Atom processor and 12-inch touchscreen that is in development by popular technology weblog, TechCrunch. On June 3, 2009, Michael Arrington posted about the upcoming arrival of a launch prototype, complete with fresh new pictures of the device and a video preview (embedded below). In the post, Arrington notes that the CrunchPad now boots directly into the browser, runs on a custom version of Linux, has a screen that is flush with the front of the device, and now has an aluminum back to help decrease the overall thickness to under 18mm. Arrington notes that the aluminum costs more than the original plastic case and steers clear of discussing a final price for the device, so chances are that it could arrive for more than the originally discussed $300 price point.

The first pictures of the long-rumored device were leaked via Michael Arrington's posterous account on April 9, 2009, and were consequently reposted around the internet. Later Arrington's website TechCrunch posted additional pictures of the device which they claim to still be in prototype form.

The tablet is designed to be exclusively used for light web browsing such as viewing webpages and watching videos on Hulu and YouTube and will have a keyboard that critics say may make trying to send emails or do other more difficult tasks more of a pain than it's worth. Details on TechCrunch indicate the device will more than likely have a built-in camera for taking pictures and shooting videos, built-in speakers, and a microphone for web chatting. According to initial posts about the device, Arrington expects the device to cost around $250 to make, and ultimately have a price point around $300.

On July 31, 2009, dchieng.com claimed to have the leaked specs on the upcoming CrunchPad: measurements 12.77 inches x 7.83 inches x 0.74 inches, 1.2kgs in weight, 12-inch screen, 1.6Ghz Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, 1 USB port, WiFi, 3G for optional mobile broadband, and running a Webkit-based browser that also serves as the device's operating system. Dchieng.com estimates price of the CrunchPad to be $399 U.S. dollars. Additionally, Singapore news site, The Straits Times ran an article calling the device the "World's first tablet PC."
