Google Chrome OS unveiled, released to open source community

Product Details

Originally released on November 19, 2006, the Microsoft Zune was an FM-radio equipped portable media player capable of playing music, video, and displaying pictures.

Available in a variety of sizes and colors, the Zune served as Microsoft's competition for Apple's iPod line of portable media players. Besides the integrated FM-radio, the Zune differentiated itself from portable media players like the iPod by adding interactivity between Zunes via an 802.11b/g wireless connection.

Zune owners who enabled the feature could see other nearby Zunes, view what's "now playing" on the devices, and temporarily share music and pictures with Zune users in approximately a 30-foot range.

The 120 GB model offered a number of enhancements over its predecessor the Zune 80, including a Zune Marketplace section found in the main menu that allowed users to browse, preview, and download music directly from the Zune online store.

The device supported media formats MP3, WMA, WMV, and MPEG-4. The 120 came with enhanced Wi-Fi features, including the ability to remember and associate your password. The Zune 120 also had better battery life, rated at 32 hours for audio playback and just shy of 5 hours for video playback.

On September 2nd, 2009, Microsoft said that the Zune had been discontinued to pave the way for the launch of its successor, the Zune HD.
