AT&T reps will be speaking at the CTIA wireless conference, and the Washington Post reports that they may announce that the carrier will allow VoIP (Voice over IP) traffic on its 3G cellular data network.

That means that previously rejected attempts by Google and Skype to offer VoIP service over the network could finally work out. AT&T resisted VoIP before in part because it feared the tech would cut into its core phone service business, and in part because it's very bandwidth intensive.

Having unlimited Skype on the 3G network sounds amazing, but considering how slow 3G actually is (and it's pretty slow for things that matter), then even an Iphone withVoIP service would fall considerably short of a regular VoIP phone. Being able to drop down to 39.99 would be amazing though - it's just that if half of your calls were dropped, it would be pointless.
