Apple buys Placebase mapping company; will it compete with Google Maps?

The former CEO of Google Maps-esque mapping website Placebase is now working for something called the "Geo Team" at Apple. Turns out Placebase was bought by Apple.
Up to this point, Apple has integrated Google Maps into its iPhone and iPod touch devices, but this could mean that the company plans to travel down its own road (so to speak) sometime in the future.
