Social networking app Loopt will be the first third-party iPhone app to remain location-aware even when it isn't running. The feature is optional; in fact, when it launches to the wide world it will cost $3.99 per month. It looks like the new service might send push notifications when you're on the same block as your friends who also use the service. Thing is, the app won't really run in the background. Instead, there will be server-to-server communication arranged by AT&T.

Amazon has offered to re-deliver the George Orwell books it pulled from Kindles several weeks ago. The move caused a PR stir, especially given the irony that 1984 was one of the books pulled by big brother. If you bought one of the books and don't want it anymore, you can opt instead to receive a $30 check from Amazon.

Samsung bigwig Kyu Uhm said at IFA this week that the company plans to launch laptops with new, high-tech OLED screen technology by late 2010. Unless someone else is planning to do that sooner and just hasn't said so yet, Samsung will be the first.
