Microsoft today announced the pricing for the various flavors for its forthcoming new operating system Windows 7 as well as general availability worldwide surrounding the launch. The basic pricing breaks down like so:

Upgrade pricing:

  • Windows 7 Home Premium (Upgrade): $119.99
  • Windows 7 Professional (Upgrade): $199.99
  • Windows 7 Ultimate (Upgrade): $219.99

Full retail:

  • Windows 7 Home Premium (Full): $199.99
  • Windows 7 Professional (Full): $299.99
  • Windows 7 Ultimate (Full): $319.99

For folks purchasing new PCs in advance of the October 22 release date, there's also an early Upgrade Option Program beginning tomorrow that gets you a bump up into Windows 7 at little or no cost when you buy a new machine with Windows Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate. For those ready to pre-order the new operating system, a more than 50% discount will be available starts tomorrow but ends July 11th in the U.S. and Canada; check the full post on the Windows 7 blog for further details on those availability intervals worldwide.

I have to say... I can't imagine spending $200 on an operating system. What do you think?
