NBC streams full TV episodes to iPhone, other smartphones via website

It's not a native app, but iPhone users can watch some NBC shows by visiting m.nbc.com in their web browsers. It reportedly works with some other smartphones, too.

You can watch some CBS shows on your iPhone with the TV.com app, but until now, NBC goodness like 30 Rock, The Office, Parks and Recreation, and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon wasn't available. We've been holding on to hope that a killer Hulu app will hit the App Store, and while that may still happen, there's a not-quite-as-good solution available now.

NBC is streaming some episodes (not nearly as many as you'll find on Hulu) of some of its shows to iPhones on the web. Just navigate your phone's web browser to http://m.nbc.com/ and you'll be able to watch both clips and full episodes broken into 5 - 10 minute chunks. They stream to the iPhone via QuickTime.

Unfortunately, it's not quite practical over 3G (we didn't even try EDGE); when we tested it, we had to wait at least a minute or two for each segment to buffer before it began. Even more frustratingly, we couldn't get it started downloading and leave it in our pockets until it was ready, because the download stops if the playback has stopped for a few seconds.

That meant it would stop and go repeatedly. That's not fun at all, but it's even less ideal when you only have a few minutes to watch while you're standing in line at the bank. Still, if you're patient, or if you have more time (like, say, if you're on a long train commute) it's watchable. And it works fantastically well over Wi-Fi.

Lifehacker reports that it also works on the T-Mobile G1, but not very well. If you've got any smartphone, it's worth at least a try.

Shows with full episodes include: 30 Rock, Crusoe, Friday Night Lights, Heroes, Howie Do it, Kath & Kim, Kings, Knight Rider, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Life, Medium, Parks and Recreation, The Celebrity Apprentice, The Chopping Block, and The Office.
