Not exactly earth-shattering considering that we knew a 2009 Windows 7 launch was a goal for Microsoft, but the official position to date had been availability of the operating system by January of 2010. Senior Vice President Bill Veghte, however, confirmed in an interview what he reiterated more formally at the keynote of Microsoft's TechEd event in Los Angeles today — that Windows 7 is on track to be "available to customers in time for the holiday shopping season."

Although Windows 7 is only an evolutionary and not a revolutionary update to the unpopular Vista release from January 2007, consumers who bypassed Vista might be eager to upgrade to, well, pretty much anything that might bring them out of the cutting edge of the fresh-out-of-2001 OS they may still be running in the form of Windows XP. If you're curious about whether any of the umpteen flavors of Windows 7 might be worth your hard-earned funds, you're free to download the pre-launch Release Candidate which will be functional for the better part of a year.
