Best Buy to host Palm Pre trial launch June 7?

About 4500 handsets are rumoured to be available around the country for a tentative $199.99 price on 2-year contract.

Looks like that June 7 Palm Pre launch rumour was correct — sort of. Assuming the latest leaked info is correct, there will be some Palm Pre handsets out in the wild on that date, available at Best Buy Mobile locations around the U.S. The trial launch would see 4,500 Pres for sale at the following probable price points (again, these are not 100% confirmed yet):

  • $199.99 on a 2-year contract
  • $299.99 for an existing Sprint customer upgrade 
  • $999.99 without contract subsidy

Even given that these numbers might change before the trial, it looks to be a mighty expensive proposition to pick up the Pre without a contract. And apparently, Sprint really needs those contracts to turn its recent fortunes (or lack thereof) around.
