Microsoft Office 2007 is literally an essential component of the world's infrastructure — the basic software used by the vast majority of businesses in developed nations. Since it's used by so many people, and since consistency is their primary concern, it doesn't see a whole lot of major changes, but every once in a while Microsoft releases a service pack that tweaks a few things.
The second of the service packs for Office 2007 just hit the proverbial streets, and while it doesn't do anything revolutionary, it does make itself worth the download. Microsoft proudly claims that Outlook (which it says the majority of its customers spend the majority of their time using) is now 26% faster. Consider that a noticeable bump in productivity.
The other big change is the addition of support for the ODF (open document) and Adobe PDF formats. Such documents can be brought into Office and treated just like native Office ones with no hitches, Microsoft claims. That's a big boon, although it's something that's been available in most competing products for quite a while.
As we said, though, it's difficult to be flexible and spritely with new formats and ideas when you have the entire globe resting on your shoulders.
