The latest version of the popular Ubuntu Linux operating system became available for download today in three forms: Desktop, Server, and Netbook. As you'd expect from open source software, it's free. You can hit up the official Ubuntu website and download any one of the versions. The netbook version can be loaded onto a USB key for netbooks that don't have optical drives.

Improvements announced in the press releases are relatively minor, although CNet notes that the user interface has been smoothed over quite a bit. The features touted by Canonical (the folks organizing the new version) include boot times as short as 25 seconds, "enhanced suspend and resume features," and greater Wi-Fi an 3G card support.

Bigger changes are likely planned in the future, especially with Microsoft's Windows 7 and Apple's Mac OS X Snow Leopard right around the corner, but this is what you get for now. Make the most of it.
