Research in Motion has officially launched their hotly anticipated BlackBerry App World mobile storefront, confirming earlier rumours they would unveil the store in conjunction with the CTIA wireless conference in Las Vegas this week (look for more of our CTIA 2009 coverage here all week). The App World is a central clearinghouse of mobile applications developed for BlackBerry devices, akin to Apple's wildly popular App Store for the iPhone and iPod touch, Google's Android Market and Palm's Software Store; Microsoft will be launching its own Windows Mobile storefront and Nokia will debut its Ovi Store later this year.

The App World will be supported for all BlackBerry devices with a track ball or SurePress touchscreen updated with at least 4.2 software or higher, including the latest hat trick (Storm, Bold and Curve) as well as Flips and the 8300 and 8800 series. You'll also need a PayPal account to purchase apps for now, although RIM says they're working on implementing alternative forms of payment. While some free apps will be offered, the minimum price for paid apps will be $2.99, differentiating the store from its flooded-with-$0.99-apps Apple counterpart. Developers also enjoy an 80/20 revenue split with RIM whereas iPhone developers only take down 70% from the App Store.

You can download the App World software here.

Downloaded this and it's really REALLY slick. Kinda slow, but that may just be because of the massive influx of new users. Also, FlyCast Mobile is amazing for podcast streaming from the BB.
