As rumored last week first by Om Malik of GigaOm, Skype is releasing a Skype application for the iPhone tomorrow that should bring the eBay-owned company's VOIP service to the iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPod touch. This news was one of the five reasons that we here at Obsessable advised that you should avoid buying an off-contract iPhone from Apple or AT&T, as it will mean that with an iPod touch, one will be able to do basically everything that one can do with an iPhone except take pictures. The application is expected to be available for free from the App Store beginning tomorrow, and will allow Skype users to place and receive calls via a WiFi connection, as well as text chat via the service. CNET managed to get a preview of the application and have more details on all the nice things it can do on your iPhone, and the short list of things it cannot do, including placing Skype calls over a cellular connection, sending and receive SMS messages, and initiating conference calls. Additionally, Skype Journal has some screenshotsof the new application collected in a Flickr slideshow that we've embedded below.

If you don't own an iPhone or iPod touch, but you do own a BlackBerry, then don't despair; a free Skype for BlackBerry application is expected in May.
