Multiple sources have tipped off NewTeeVee that Research In Motion is poised to announce a mobile TV download service for its BlackBerry smartphone line at the upcoming CTIA wireless convention in April. A monthly subscription fee would cover unlimited downloads of full episodes, with shows downloading in the background over Wi-Fi. Reportedly a number of TV networks have already signed on to license content for the new service, which they'll need in spades to make a compelling service.

The rumour is certainly plausible given the upcoming launch of BlackBerry App World, a mobile application store akin to Apple's iPhone App Store and the Google Android Market as well as upcoming storefronts for Windows Mobile and Nokia devices. Also plausible — and smart — considering industry projections put mobile video at the forefront of mobile data growth within the next few years.
