The new version of iTunes is not a major renovation — iTunes 8.1 mostly adds useful but unexciting stuff like parental controls and third generation iPod shuffle support — but there are a couple new features we figured would be worth mentioning.

The most notable new toy is iTunes DJ. A DJ playlist is like any other generated shuffle playlist, except that you can more easily drag and drop songs to re-order them. Granted, we wondered why Apple didn't just make all playlists behave this way, but that's not really the cool part anyway. Check a box in the settings and you can let your friends use the iPhone or iPod touch Remote application to vote on which song should play next.

If you still buy those "CD" things, you'll be pleased to know that 8.1 improves the quality of music files you rip from your CDs using iTunes. Throw in the ability to use the Genius sidebar with movies and TV episodes, and we think that makes for a nice little update.
