A T-Mobile spokesperson told the fine folks over at UK tech site Pocket-lint that the long-awaited "Cupcake" update to the Google Android operating system will become available for your T-Mobile G1 (y'know, if you have one) sometime next month, possibly coinciding with the European launch of the HTC Magic aka T-Mobile G2.

This has been a long time coming; the update will add a bunch of stuff G1 owners have been begging for for months, and it's been delayed a number of times. If you own one of these things, you just have a few weeks left before you can partake in all the updates!

Among those updates: the web browser will get search and copy-and-paste functionality, the camera will be able to record videos (currently it only does still images), and there will even be an on-screen keyboard so you can do it iPhone style and avoid having to flip out the keyboard for quick, one-off Google searches. You'll even be able to save MMS attachments finally. There are a lot of smaller updates and optimizations too, so sit tight

I can't wait for this update. I am in desperate need for the phone dialer fixes. I heard the timeout value is now settable. I hate the way the dialer keypad always disappears when I need it open for a minute or 2 to navigate complicated voice mail systems. Once Adobe releases PDF and Flash support this phone will be complete. The new video recording features are nice too.

I hope the April release date is correct this time. Its been rumors about release dates since December when they first annouced they would merge cupcake into the master branch. The only thing that makes me weary is the fact that the video recorder portion of cupcake is still not functional & with Apple not including it in 3.0 google will definatly want it to be a part of the cupcake update. I just hope cupcake comes out before 3.0 so I can have 1 more thing to brag about to my iPhone (iCrap) owning friends

I have been working for T-mobile development team since they were Powertel and Voicestream back in 2000. I just received my new !.5 firmware update this morning. Just got to Rapidshare and download. no need to wait for the OTA version.

Is there a firm date for this update release yet?

B.S. This appears to be just another rumor. People have been claiming this would happen since December. It is now April 23, and no more news, no OTA update, and it appears to still be in development.

Did Google really expect this when they ordered a Cupcake? http://bit.ly/lH6ZA
