Apple just invited various members of the press to an event in California on the 17th of March, where the company will show off the new 3.0 operating system software for the iPhone. The current version is 2.0, which added support for third party apps, among other things.

We don't have a clue what 3.0 will include, but the fact that Apple seems to be dedicating an event to it rather than waiting for the WWDC event in June (where it normally makes announcements) would seem to indicate that you have something to look forward to if you're an iPhone owner. If it deserves its own event, it's got to be good right? Apple didn't even host major events for the recent updates to the iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro, or iPod shuffle.

We're already dreaming up a wishlist: background apps (presently the iPhone can only run one third-party app at a time), Bluetooth tethering to your laptop for anywhere-internet access, multi-media messaging (the Boy Genius Report claims it's heard word of both of those), and yes, copy-and-paste.

So will this be a downloadable free change, or what?

That's likely. The iPhone 2.0 software was available free of charge to folks who'd purchased the original iPhone with the 1.0 software.

Very cool, Samuel, thanks, especially since my iPhone is just a couple of weeks old.
