Welcome to rumnor-busting Monday at Obsessable!
According to Chinese language newspaper Commercial Times, Taiwan-based company Wintek is working with Apple to supply touch panel screens for a new Apple netbook-type device scheduled for a Q3 2009 release. This is a returning rumor that we've heard many times and have yet to see come to fruition, so take it with the necessary tablespoon of salt. Everyone wants Apple to produce a netbook (including us), Steve Jobs said flat out that they weren't working on one, and so the rumors begin to percolate.
Similarly, we found out earlier this year that Google's Android operating system could be compiled to run on existing netbooks, and recent comments by Google CEO Erick Schmidt are now being construed by several different publications to mean that Google is actually working on building a Google netbook. This rumor seems even more tenuous than the Apple netbook rumor, given that Google doesn't manufacture any devices besides their Google box search device, but instead relies on 3rd party manufacturers like HTC to build devices like the T-Mobile G1 and the HTC Magic that run Google's Android OS. However, for these same reasons, we're more likely to see netbooks running Android before we see any Apple-branded netbooks.
