Research In Motion isn't alone in having a phone making news for being on the fritz. It seems like this spate of bad luck is affecting multiple manufacturers, as today we get word that both LG and Nokia are dealing with handset problems of their own.

Nokia's XpressMusic 5800 has been suffering from defects on two fronts, with both the 3G radio and the phone's earpiece speaker causing trouble. The earpiece isn't wired directly to the phone, but uses spring-loaded electrical contacts to connect to the main circuit board. Apparently as a result of this, in certain conditions, especially when humid, a thin layer of contamination can build up on the contacts, making the earpiece cut out. Nokia has a new supplier for the part worked out, so if you're experiencing problems with your 5800, contact the company for service to have the part replaced. There's no info yet on what's causing the 3G problems, making the phone unable to connect at high speeds, but we'll keep alert for any word.

LG has a bit of a more serious issue to correct, as it received a report of problems with e911 service that the company is responding to by recalling the affected phones. Even though this is all predicated by only a single report of a dropped call, apparently due to a bad GPS lock, the company doesn't want to take any chances with its customers' safety. All LG 830 Spyder phones with software versions T83LGV03 or T83LGV04 are being recalled. These handsets were sold through smaller rural carriers in the U.S. during the fall of last year. The 30,000 or so affected phones should be able to be repaired with a software upgrade.
