Sony Ericsson unveiled a new milestone product at the Mobile World Congress this weekend. The prototype is temporarily named Idou, and its most significant claim to fame is its 12-megapixel camera with xenon flash. We don't need to tell you that's a fine camera for a cell phone!

The Idou also sports a 3.5-inch, 16:9 screen. 16:9 is the aspect ratio used by many movies and all widescreen TV shows, so the intention is clearly to make this phone an ideal mobile media player. To that end, Sony Ericsson will begin offering you movie downloads on its PlayNow mobile phone download service, which already has music and games on tap.

By adding more media features and a respectable camera to its cell phone lineup, Sony Ericsson is following up on a just-announced strategy to converge a wide range of products (phones, Walkman media players, and CyberShot cameras) so you can do all the cool stuff you want to do on one device.

As you might guess, this phone will probably be pricy. We don't know how much it will cost, or exactly when it will come out, but Sony Ericsson insists that you'll be able to pick up a non-prototype version in the second half of this year.
