It looks like live television could be making its way to the iPhone. PacketVideo has announced that it is done with its mobile video application for the phone and plans to offer the app to cell phone carriers, which can then offer customers their own carrier-branded mobile television service.
For U.S. users this means that AT&T would have to sign up to launch its own mobile television service specifically for the iPhone. The company already offers MobiTV, Flo TV and a business television service for other handsets so it's not too much of a reach to imagine it will create a mobile television service for the iPhone as well.
PacketVideo claims we should "expect to see a major mobile operator launch this application within 6-8 weeks," but did not disclose what carrier or where that launch would be so there's no telling where it might pop up. Mobile television as a whole isn't very popular in the United States (just 2.1% of mobile subscribers in the U.S. watch television on their phones) but is very popular in other parts of the world, especially in Asia where TV is broadcast directly to handsets, so users are not paying data charges to tune in.
If AT&T was to offer a live television service for the iPhone, would you subscribe?
