Immediately following the dropping of Windows Mobile 6.5 this morning, LG announced its commitment to making 50, that's right, 50 new Windows Mobile handsets by the year 2012. Currently the company is only rocking one WinMo handset, so committing to a number as large as 50 certainly indicates LG has a lot of confidence in the platform, and where Microsoft may be going with it in the future.

Currently Microsoft only has 13.9% of the global mobile operating system market, with Symbian leading the pack with 52.4% and RIM at 16.5%. Microsoft's deal with LG puts it in a much better position in the global marketplace.

LG's commitment to making 50 Windows Mobile phones means we will see at least that many new touchscreen handsets from the company over the next four years. The company is not committed to exclusively creating Windows Mobile smartphones, so we could certainly see a smartphone or two running Android or another operating system as well.
