Users of the T-Mobile G1 cell phone and the Android mobile phone operating system are being warned to not use the phone's web browser.
At a hacker conference this weekend, security researcher Charlie Miller indicated that there is a vulnerability in Google's Android that could allow hackers to remotely take control of your phone's web browser and related functions. If you do things like check your bank account or login to other secure sites, the hackers could gain access to login credentials for those sites that have been saved in the browser and its history. They could also get access to things like your credit card information if you decide to make purchases online using your phone.
The flaw in the system was found in code written by the company PacketVideo who contributed to building of Android's browser. While a PacketVideo provided fix for the problem has been available since February 7th, Google hasn't pushed the patch out yet to Android phones. Until then, Miller suggests that users avoid using the browser, or only visit trusted sites over T-Mobile's network rather than over Wi-Fi
