Ever been to one of Apple's official retail stores? They foster an immersive atmosphere that likely leads to the desire to buy expensive things — at least, that's what Apple hopes. Microsoft believes in that idea, apparently, as it seems all but certain now that the more understated software and hardware company will open its own retail stores before long.

It just appointed a corporate vice president of retail sales, David Porter, and picking out locations and designing an experience that will appeal to the public (read: you and us) are the first things on his agenda. The plan is to "engage" us more closely to show just how neat the Windows 7, Windows Mobile, Windows Live, (and presumably the Xbox 360) products really are.

We don't know when or where these stores will open; presumably major U.S. hubs like New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Chicago will be included but it's anyone's guess as to whether or not the stores will pop up elsewhere too.

I wonder what they will carry? Will they carry smart phones, huge computer lines mouses and keyboards? They would also have a ridiculous amount of software they could sell; their game section alone could fill a store. I will be interested in seeing how this turns out.
