Sony PlayStation 3 to get games and movies on the same disc

Game/film combinations should arrive before the end of the year.

Games based on movies are sometimes commercial successes regardless of their quality. Branded game movies with titles that everyone is already familiar with are able to resonate with just about anyone. Sony hopes to expand on that built-in success by introducing Blu-ray discs that house both a feature film and its video game counterpart for the PlayStation 3.

Speaking with Max Console, Sony's director of hardware marketing for the PS3 John Koller expressed the feeling that these new hybrid discs would be a common sight before the end of the year.

The possible combinations of a game/film union are staggering. And, while not probable, it's certainly possible that games and movies from separate franchises could be married onto a single disc. A sci-fi space horror disc with both an HD cut of Aliens and PS3's Dead Space could be intriguing, and the possibilities just grow from there.

Nothing official has been announced at this point, but we'd be interested to see what kind of pricing structure would follow a decision such as this. With PS3 game prices already scraping the $60 mark, how much would you be willing to pay for a combination of both your favorite flick and the interactive experience to go along with it? Should that $60 game price tag be enough to warrant the inclusion of the film upon which it is based, for free? Time will tell.

Greatest idea ever... as long as there are plenty of titles and they don't have a scary price tag!

It's a good idea, my only fear is that we all know that Sony has no problem with high prices. Granted the Ps3 came down pretty quick in retrospect. All in all I really like the idea of getting a movie and maybe the tie-in game. OK most tie in games are not that good, but some games with the franchise names are pretty good.
I wonder if this idea goes through how it will change up game development time frames with the time it takes to get a blu-ray out.
Cool article, thanks for the heads up on the news.

i must say its a very good idea, the only thing im worried about is as mike mentioned, sony putting a huge price tag on them, think about it, a game in the uk costs about £40-£50 and blu rays are between £15-£30, if the price is huge i wont buy it, im going out to buy the game not a movie.
