Palm has announced that it will no longer create products based on its Palm OS in favor of using its new webOS and Windows Mobile.
It's been a good run for the Palm OS. The operating system has been around for close to twelve years. It was originally designed for the Pilot PDA in 1996, and is currently used in a variety of smartphones, GPS units, barcode readers, and mobile gaming devices.
Palm's webOS was unveiled last month at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas specifically for use with the Palm Pre. The operating system is designed to work like a deck of cards that you shuffle through, and allows you to use more than one application on the device at a time.
The company plans on allowing third-parties to continue to make devices that use the operating system, so we may still see it pop up every now and then in the future.

I agree, RIP Palm OS. It was a good run. Oh well, I'm sure they'll still support it for a while, since so many people have treos still, or can't afford the switch as yet.
