Overshadowed perhaps by certain other big news in the electronic reader space today, an upcoming competitor in the eReader market announced its content partners today (press release embedded at the end of this post). Plastic Logic announced at the O'Reilly Tools of Change Conference in New York that it's signing on with content aggregators Ingram Digital for eBooks, LibreDigital for eNewspapers and Zinio for eMagazines as well as announcing direct partnerships with major newspapers the Financial Times and USA Today. They will also be launching an econtent store in partnership with Fictionwise Inc. where users can download content from its mainstream media partners as well as small and independent publishers who are invited to participate in the Plastic Logic Publisher's Program, designed to help content creators format, distribute and sell content on the Plastic Logic Reader.

We had a chance to get a hands-on demo of Plastic Logic's eReader at CES recently and were impressed with the thin 8.5 x 11-inch device (check out our impressions including 2 demo videos). Some differentiators of the device from Amazon's just-announced Kindle 2 include its larger size, native support for document formats such as PDF, HTML, DOC, JPEG, PNG, and BMP (the Kindle 2 supports these formats but only via a conversion process that Amazon charges $0.10 a pop for) as well as support for Excel, Powerpoint, ePub and eReader formats, and a much greater focus on the business-class end user.

As of this writing the Plastic Logic Reader will lack notable features of the Kindle 2 including support for audio formats, text-to-speech, and content downloads over EV-DO, favoring Wi-Fi access instead (as well as over USB). One other key difference is the choice to go with a touchscreen instead of a QWERTY keyboard, favoring a more concretely "digital paper" approach and lending itself to an "iPhone of eReaders" analogy by eschewing hardware-based controls in favor of one large screen area. Sony's new reader, the PRS-700, features a touchscreen as well but also still has dedicated control buttons, whereas the Plastic Logic Reader forgoes a button control mechanism entirely in favor of pure screen-based user interface.

After today's announcement we'd say another key differentiator appears to be their interest in enabling small publishers to distribute and even sell content on the Plastic Logic Reader. VP of Business Development Daren Benzi was quoted as saying, "Our open platform for content, formats, applications and additional focus on advertising, makes Plastic Logic an ideal partner for publishers and content providers that want to serve consumers in new and exciting ways," indicating that inline advertising will play a role in content monetization, as well as that Plastic Logic is hoping to create a content ecosystem for the device by opening the platform to small publishers and bloggers.

We're excited by the prospect of an upcoming eReader with a stated commitment to creating an open platform content and a way for small and independent publishers to distribute and monetize their content to the emerging portable digital reader market. While the stated focus on the business end user could perhaps diminish mainstream adoption of the Plastic Logic Reader, the emergence of an open platform and digital reader content market could surely put pressure on the likes of Amazon and Sony to pursue a more open content model for their eReader devices, particularly if small publishers flock to the Plastic Logic Content Store and find a market for their wares. We'll be keeping an eye on the Plastic Logic Reader as the device goes into trials with selected partners and customers towards the end of this year.

Today's press releases:

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA and O’REILLY TOOLS OF CHANGE CONFERENCE, NEW YORK CITY—February 9, 2009—Plastic Logic today announced agreements with its first content partners, including the nation’s leading content aggregators and two of the most valued daily newspapers for business readers. The agreements with Ingram Digital (ebooks), LibreDigital (enewspapers), Zinio (emagazines) and a direct relationship with business newspaper, the Financial Times, and the nation’s top selling newspaper, USA TODAY, lay the foundation for the company to sell and distribute a wealth of content for its forthcoming Plastic Logic Reader.

With these partnerships, plus pending deals and currently available econtent on the web, Plastic Logic’s open platform is building the world’s most relevant collection of digital content for business users on any eReader platform.
