Just days after Apple's latest iPhone/iPod touch firmware release, hackers already have jailbreak tools available for the devices, letting you run unsigned code.
The first generation iPhone and iPod touch models are apparently easy to run the hack on, but things are trickier for the 3G. The latest 2.2.1 firmware updated code in the phone's cellular subsystem, disabling existing programs used to unlock the handset. The only way to have a 2.2.1 phone both jailbroken and unlocked is to do a tricky manual upgrade, where you prevent that cellular code from changing. It seems pretty risky to us, but if you're down for it, the tools you need are posted at iphone-dev.org.
