Just a little over a week ago rumors were percolating about Google offering a new cloud-based online storage option, and now thanks to some code that showed up in a recent update to Google's Google Pack software, there's some actual evidence to add some legitimacy to these rumors:
// Localized product category of GDrive
_CI_messages.CI_GDRIVE_CATEGORY = 'Online file backup and storage';
// Localized short description of GDrive (1st
// of 2 description lines)
_CI_messages.CI_GDRIVE_DESCRIPTION_1 = 'GDrive provides reliable storage for all of your files, including photos, music and documents';
// Localized short description of GDrive (2nd
// of 2 description lines)
_CI_messages.CI_GDRIVE_DESCRIPTION_2 = 'GDrive allows you to access your files from anywhere, anytime, and from any device - be it from your desktop, web browser or cellular phone';
This code reveals both a product category and description of a new product referred to as GDrive, which would appear to be Google's rumored cloud-based online storage option. This code was added to the Google Pack just about a week ago, but it's unclear if this means that the release of Google's GDrive is imminent or if it's simply code paving the way for a release down the road.
If Google is working on an online storage solution that would be made freely available to users and accessible "from anywhere, anytime, and from any device," then it would be yet another step towards the company offering a full alternative online office suite, and possibly full operating system, to offer more cloud-based versions of the services customers are used to having on their desktops. This, of course, could be a longtime viable threat to Microsoft's current monopoly on desktop computers.
