Apple to pay $22.5 million for scratched iPod nano screen settlement

Users with first-generation nanos that had easily-scratched screens will get between $15 and $20.

Have you been holding on to an old first-generation Apple iPod nano? How's the screen been holding up? If yours suffered from excess scratches, making the nano less fun to use, you're entitled to a portion of the settlement from a class-action suit which Apple just agreed to.

It turns out that some of these first-gen nanos didn't have their screens properly coated, making them more vulnerable to scratches. By going to the settlement website, you can enter in your nano's serial number and verify whether or not it's one of the affected models.

The terms of the settlement Apple agreed to provide a $22.5 million fund. About $5 million of that will go to attorneys and fees, with the rest intended to partially reimburse customers who bought the defective media players. While that's a large sum of money, it's a drop in the bucket compared to the $10 billion Apple took in last quarter or the $26 billion in cash reserves it's built up.

If you've got one of the affected nanos, you have until June to make a claim and get your part of the settlement. If your iPod nano came with a protective slip case you'll be getting $15, or $25 if yours didn't have the case. Not enough to buy a new nano, certainly, but enough to pick up a few songs on iTunes, at least.
