Latest Seagate firmware hopefully puts an end to Barracuda failures

This fix should prevent the original error from occurring, as well as correct bugs in the firmware released several days ago.

We've got our fingers crossed that this is the end of Seagate's Barracudas-of-doom fiasco. For those of you who haven't been following, there were some Seagate drives that were inexplicably dying, so the company rushed out a firmware fix that should have solved the problem for any drive that wasn't yet dead. Except, that "fix" ended up breaking even more drives, exacerbating the problem. Finally, the company has fixed its fix and issued new firmware, hopefully putting this issue to bed once and for all.

Head on over to Seagate's website for the latest software you'll need, along with instructions on installing it. There's still a chance your drive is too messed up to even let the software flash it with the latest firmware, in which case you'll need to get in touch with Seagate yourself. The company has agreed to foot the data recovery bill for affected drives. Unlike many hard drive failures, since this one's all in software, you should be able to get all your files back undamaged.
