More treats are in store for Sony fans today, as not only did we hear about a new PSP firmware, but now there's word of an updated PlayStation 3 firmware as well, version 2.60.

The biggest change is the Photo Gallery application, which lets you sort through and display digital photos from sources connected to your console. There are a ton of ways to sort your pics, using both metadata saved by your camera and data gleaned through image processing techniques. You can categorize pics based on when they were taken, which camera you used, and even advanced sorts like whether or not there's someone smiling in the picture, or how old the subjects appear. You'll need firmware 2.60 to install the Photo Gallery, though it's technically a separate download of around 100 megs.

Codec support gets a small upgrade, now supporting playback of videos encoded in the DivX 3.11 format. And lastly, the way the PlayStation Store handles accounts has changed, now allowing non logged-in users to browse the selection before joining the PlayStation Network.

The 2.60 firmware should be available very, very soon from Sony.
