There's not much detail to this news, but the number says it all: 500 million applications for the iPhone and iPod touch have been downloaded from the Apple App Store since it launched in July. This is proudly bragged about in an almost full-screen splash image at the official Apple website.

You might have noticed those two gadgets are everywhere now; seems that they've become especially ubiquitous since the holidays, when the number of apps downloaded quickly leapt from 300 to 500 million. Folks got iPhones and iPods for Christmas and then went to the App Store to pick up all the essentials, plus (no doubt) a few less-than-essential things, like games.

If you're crazy for iPhone apps, you're not alone. Not even close to it! Hey, we're all about the apps, too.
