How would you feel if Obsessable started emailing or text messaging you about all our latest stories just because you visited the site a few times? Like you were being spammed? That's the gist of what millions of AT&T customers are going through, now that the company is sending out unsolicited text message advertisements for American Idol.
If you've ever used your AT&T phone to text in a vote on American Idol, or if the company just considers you a heavy texter based on your past usage, you might have gotten one of the ads for the show's latest season. At the very least, AT&T isn't charging its customers for the privilege of receiving these text messages, and claims to let recipients opt-out of future messages.
So, what's the verdict? We can see how AT&T thought this through, limiting the spam to subscribers that actually might be interested, but it still seems way out of line for a service provider to pull this kind of stunt. Are any readers AT&T customers who were targeted for this advertisement, and did you feel just mild annoyance or something more?
