There are a lot of music apps for the iPhone, but when we saw ZooZ Beat (which is also available on the Nokia N95) on the floor at the Consumer Electronics Show, it caught our ears like others hadn't. Actually, first it caught our eye: the app uses the phone's accelerometer to turn your music into notes, so as you can see in our video embedded after the break, visitors to the app developers' booth at CES were waving their arms around. It's a bit of silly fun, and if that's your thing, you should consider downloading this app. It's only $3 on the iPhone App Store, believe it or not.
Some of the instruments were like existing rhythm games in that one swing results in one beat, without any variation. But some of ZooZ Beat's instruments — for example, its synthesizer — measure the force with which you wave the iPhone or N95 around, playing different notes on the scale based on how you shake it. You can also put down notes by tapping on a staff on the screen, but that's not as fun, now is it? The app is already available for both phones, and the team behind it plans to roll out a new version within a month or two that will let you upload and download sound samples at a website.
