No sooner did we post our first impressions of Windows 7 Beta, than some enterprising souls figured out how to get valid working activation keys for Windows 7 Beta. Basically you have to login to your Windows Live account from the TechNet Downloads page, and then from the same window, paste in the following URL for the 64-bit key:

https://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience/scripts/gcs.aspx?Product=tn-win7-64-ww&LCID=1033

...and this URL for the 32-bit key:

https://www.microsoft.com/betaexperience/scripts/gcs.aspx?Product=tn-win7-32-ww&LCID=1033

We just tried and successfully grabbed a key. If you've already installed Windows 7 Beta, then you have to navigate to Control Panel > All Control Panels > System and scroll down to the Windows Activation section which should say "You have 29 days left to activate. Click here to activate now." Click that link and you will be prompted for the code. Enter the code and then click Activate online now. The online activation failed the first few times with an error for us, but simply trying again eventually yielded a successful activation with the code provided, so don't lose hope if it doesn't work the first time. Hello, no expiration until August 2009! Supposedly activation will be limited to the first 2.5 million copies of Windows Beta 7, so you might want to go ahead and download your copy now and get the code. Good luck!

Woah! Yeah, yesterday I was able to download the Windows 7 beta but didn't give me a key. Just tried this trick you mentioned and sure enough, give me a key. Hopefully the key will be valid when I install Windows 7 later today.. once I get a new H/D from Frys.

Thanks for the tip, C.K.!

Is there a way to dual boot Windows Vista and Windwos 7? Or will Windows 7 just try to override Vista if I install it on my laptop?

Yes you can dual boot. That's how I set it up. Lifehacker has a post that I link to from the hands on that is linked to above....

Hey Thanks. Mine had 30 day expiration limit and I was about to uninstall it because of the hassle. Now that I can have it until august, I will take full advantage of it and see if I like it or not. This post is awesome. Thanks a lot.

Thanks a bunch... this still works perfect! Much better than hacking the resources with vista stuff as some other blogs suggested.

Still works. Just got one key for each version, although I can't imagine installing the 32bit version. I wish they wouldn't even make it. It's not like anyone is still selling 32bit processors. This just creates confusion and driver difficulties.

Just tested it with build 7127 x64. This method works, even with Firefox!
Thanks!
